International Cooperation Project for Preservation of Biome
The Ministry of Environment will start "International Cooperation Project for Preservation of Biome" to study ecosystem in developing nations including Southeast Asian nations with rich biological diversity such as rain-forest and alpine plants, and to prepare measures to preserve and restore such ecosystems jointly with the concerning nation.
The project is planned to be proceeded from 2007 to 2014, with total of 22.2 billion won investment, and with cooperation with 9 nations.
In 2007, the Ministry plans to select regions with rich biological diversity such as Indonesia, Laos, China and Central Asian region in Russia, and pursue the project by concluding MOU with the local institutions in the mentioned nations.
Based on the result of this project, the Ministry is planning to expand counterpart nations and develop various cooperative projects in accordance with the characteristics of each nation. As such, Korea, as a responsible member of the international community, will make utmost effort to preserve trans-global biome and enhance its national competitiveness in the area of biological resources by promoting exchanges and cooperation in biological diversity issues.
