Even though precipitation significantly decreased in 2004 compared to past year, the water quality of the four major rivers maintained the same level as that in 2003.
Since the water management measure for the four major rivers was introduced in 1998, the water quality of the four rivers has been improved. In 2004, the water quality of Paldang, a major water source of the four rivers, was the same as that in 2003, the water quality of Daecheong and Juam improved, and the water quality of Mulgeom deteriorated a little bit.
In 2004, precipitation that greatly affects water quality reached only 81% of that in 2003, but water quality remained the same. It is attributed to the ¡®Comprehensive Water Quality Improvement Measures on the 4 Major Rivers¡¯ that the government has carried out.
The Ministry of Environment is going to assess the accomplishment of the comprehensive measure and establish a basic plan on water conservation of the four major rivers (a 10-year project from 2006 to 2015) within this year to set a new goal for water management. Also, it plans to revise the ¡®Act Relating to Han River Quality Improvement & Community Support¡¯ and obligatorily apply the ¡®Total maximum loading system of pollution¡¯ to Han River.
